"Night Crawlers"
August 1 - September 20, 2008
Night
Crawlers,
an exhibit of contemporary wall sculpture by Judy Bales, will
be on view August 1st through September 20th. The
opening reception will be held during the 1st Friday Artwalk,
August 1st, 6:30 - 10 p.m. A gallery walk with the artist
will be on Thursday, August 21st, 8:00 p.m.
Bales has had
numerous one person showings throughout the Midwest and beyond.
She has been included in significant national shows and is the
designer of major public art projects. The works for this show
will utilize varied metals to create "fabrics" that
have movement, energy and luminosity.
“I have worked for more than 20 years in fiber and mixed
media, and, more recently, in public art,” says Bales. “Cold,
industrial materials intrigue me with their potential to be used
to create objects that contain warmth and lyricism. Although materials
cast off from industry and agriculture provide the raw materials
for my work, the inspiration for the work comes from the landscape,
my personal sense of place, and the human figure.”
"In her studio, Judy manipulates industrial material, weaving
metals scraps and wire into her creations just as you would use
thread and fabric,” says Fairfield Art Association writer
Cindy Travers. “Metal mesh, plastic bags, paint and wire
are fashioned into gallery installations expressing lively emotions.
Some seem like they would come to life after the lights are shut
off and everyone is gone, slinking along the floor and dancing
wildly from the ceiling."
